Crunchy Who?

Scott Headshot ZebraHey there! So I’m supposed to tell you a little about myself in this space…and that just seems narcissistic and weird. But you clicked here, so I guess I can share a few tidbits.

You’re probably wondering if Crunchy is actually my first name. It’s not. Sorry. (I know – that would be such a cool first name!) “Crunchy” is a throwback word to those hippie days when earthy folk were described as “crunchy-granola”.  Today, it’s the same deal, but now it mostly means green or eco-friendly. The word is definitely making a comeback. Liz Lemon used it in an episode of 30 Rock. So poof – it’s legit.

As far as me being “Crunchy Scott” – well, I’ve been pretty crunchy my entire life. But professionally I adopted the name after I started writing and producing all sorts of green stuff. I’ll talk more about that later. But there ya go. That’s the story of how CRUNCHY and SCOTT became one.

Scott Pink Resized

Totally Crunchy!

I’m all about eco-friendly craft and DIY projects. And I’m a flexitarian foodie (mostly vegan). But after years of producing vids highlighting those thangs – I recently added a new twist – THE 80s! That’s right, producing a how-to YouTube tute about vegan broccoli soup doesn’t cut it anymore. Now it’s gotta be Ghostbuster’s Slimer Soup!

This retro adventure is a real blast for me seeing as I grew up in the 80s and still crave the movies, the music and those awesome TV shows with extra long theme songs. I have no shortage of inspiration. All my recipes and craft projects now have an 80’s flair. And while I don’t have to do a ton of research for my videos – because I lived it – I do read up on all my 80’s topics. And even I, the ultimate 80’s kid, am learning a few new things about the most awesomest decade ever.

In a nutshell, GREEN + 80s = Crunchy Scott

Crunchy here, Crunchy there, Crunchy everywhere

I’m happily busy these days with lots of eco-minded projects. I’m producing my TOTALLY CRUNCHY series, which you can catch weekly on YouTube. I’m a regular contributor to Washington Parent Magazine where I come up with all sorts of green crafts ideas for kids. Oh yeah, did I mention I wrote a book? It’s called Crunchy Kids: Crafting, Cooking and Celebrating the Planet. It’s pretty rad. Check it out!

And last but not least, I’m a writer for Crafting a Green World. Whew. There are a few other things, but I wanted to keep this short. Oh well – if your love of the environment, the 80s, crafting and cooking jives with my crunchy life, then hit me up on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest! Crunchy Scott is everywhere – except Instagram. I’m not there…yet.

Just the Facts

Geez, I didn’t think I’d have enough info take make a bio about myself, and yet here we are. So if I left anything unanswered, here are a few random facts for you to chew on. If you’d like to know anything else, let me know. I’m an open book. Sorta.

Hometown: Lynchburg, VA

Current Home: Washington D.C.

Adopted Hometowns: Charlottesville, VA (the smallest greenest city in the U.S. It’s true. Look it up.)

Age: Really? OK, old enough to remember the 80s but too young to have done anything bad during the 80s. (Well, that’s not entirely true.)

Favorite 80’s TV Show: Easy. “The Facts of Life”.

Favorite 80’s Movie: This one is NOT so easy. “The Breakfast Club”. “Sixteen Candles”. “Some Kind of Wonderful”. Ugh. I can’t decide. But I do see a “John Hughes” trend here!

80’s Crush: Kirk Cameron. Yes, I know what he’s up to these days. But that’s whose photo was taped to the inside of my Trapper Keeper.
